July 19, 2011: At 3:30 am (EDT) today, several Israeli naval ships stopped the French-flagged ship Dignite/Al Karama while on the last leg of its voyage to Gaza. The small boat with 16 people was approximately 40 miles away from Gaza, very much in international waters. By 6 am the Israeli military had taken control of the boat and was bringing it to the Israel port of Ashdod, where the people on the boat would be arrested. At this time there have been no reports of any injuries. All communication with the passengers on the Dignitehas been cut off.Lees verder

The French boat Dignit/Karama (Dignity) left the Greek island Kastellorizo around 8.30PM local time on Saturday July 16, 2011, heading south. The ten passengers onboard view themselves as representatives of all of the Freedom Flotilla II Stay Human. The rest of the Flotillas ships have been detained in different Greek ports, through bureaucratic obstruction, sabotage, sudden restrictions and withdrawals of flags.
The Dignit, sailing under a French flag, left Corsica on June 25th, and has, over the past weeks, been in Greek waters. It has now left so far without being followed by the Greek coast guard or Navy. Lees verder

Door tegenwerking van de Griekse autoriteiten en sabotage van een aantal schepen heeft de vredesvloot naar Gaza niet kunnen uitvaren. Onder dreiging van getrokken geweren dirigeerde de kustwacht vervolgens het schip naar een Griekse marinehaven, waar het nu nog ligt. De aanwezige journalisten hebben het schip verlaten; de Amerikaanse kapitein is gearresteerd onder beschuldiging van zware misdaad, de crew wordt in detentie op het schip gehouden en delegatieleden blijven uit solidariteit aan boord.
Direct daarop bezocht de Griekse kustwacht ook andere schepen van de Freedom Flotilla en nam de scheepspapieren in beslag. Wie weigert, dreigt te worden gearresteerd, zoals Sandra Rush, joods Canadese opvarende van de Tahrir en lid van de Freedom Flotilla Stuurgroep. Alle schepen, buiten de Franse die zich op open zee bevinden, liggen nu vast in de havens. Zonder scheepspapieren is uitvaren immers onmogelijk.

When the first reports surfaced about yet another international flotilla heading to Gaza, it was difficult to understand its aims. After all, the opening of the Rafah Crossing put an end to the halcyon days of Israel's blockade on Gaza, and we are now hearing about an improvement in the standard of living in the Strip; according to optimistic predictions, it may rise to almost-humane levels this year. However, slowly we are discovering that the latest flotilla has its own objectives. If the Marmara that took part in the previous sail sought to present Israel's brutality to the world (and managed to do so, thanks to our kind assistance,) it appears that the current flotilla was meant to present Israel's stupidity.Lees verder

Around 200 activists are currently scrambling across Turkey and Greece with the aim of breaking the Israeli siege on the Gaza strip, the second attempt to reach the coastal enclave by sea in as many years.
The largest group, some 65 activists who will be sailing on the Italian-Dutch ship Stefano Chiarim, is assembling in a small port town on the Greek island of Corfu, as the organisers are getting the final paper work sorted with the Greek coast guard.
The date of departure has been postponed a number of times, and after spending six days attending briefings and hanging around their beach-side hotel, most activists are eager to get the flotilla underway.Lees verder

De ‘Dignité-Al Karama’ is vanochtend vertrokken uit de wateren van Ille Rousse in Corsica. Het voegt zicht over enkele dagen bij de ‘Louise Michel’ die zich momenteel in Griekenland bevindt.
De 40 Franse opvarenden van de twee boten in de Middellandse zee zijn er klaar voor. De afgesproken ontmoetingsplek is Athene. In minder dan een week gaan ze op weg naar de Gazastrook. Er is voor enkele duizenden euro’s materiaal gekocht door de campagne ‘Een Franse boot voor Gaza’ dat is doorgestuurd naar een van de twee internationale cargoboten.
De twee Franse boten zullen zich voegen bij een twaalftal andere zeeschepen die meedoen aan dit internationale initiatief. Ze vervoeren 5000 ton aan materieel naar de Gazastrook. Vanuit de hele wereld monsteren zo’n 300 tot 400 personen aan om aan te dringen op het einde aan de blokkade van Gaza en implementatie van het Internationaal Recht.
Gezien deze historische actie van burgers, moeten onze staten wel handelen. Ze moeten ervoor zorgen dat Israel de boten doorlaat. De Internationale Federatie voor de Rechten van de Mens heeft in een persbericht bevestigd dat de ‘internationale gemeenschap gehouden is om alle noodzakelijke maatregelen te nemen om de toegang van humanitaire hulp aan de burgers in de Gazastrook te verzekeren’.
Wij doen wat de internationale gemeenschap zou moeten doen. Onze druk werpt reeds zijn vruchten af. Enkele dagen voor het vertrek van de Flotilla heeft Israel het de VN toegestaan om de noodzakelijke materialen Gaza binnen te brengen voor de bouw van 1200 huizen en 18 scholen.
Wat wij willen is de volledige opheffing van de blokkade van de Gazastrook en dat eindelijk de fundamentele rechten en de waardigheid van de Palestijnen wordt gerespecteerd.

   Photos can be used courtesy of Vincent Wijlhuizen | Despite the rain a group of more than 50 Dutch and Palestinians joined the mini flotilla in the canals in Utrecht, a city in the heart of the Netherlands, to show their support for the departure of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The departure of the Dutch - Italian boat that will carry 12 people with the Dutch nationality is scheduled for Tuesday. Amongst the Dutch participants of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla are students, journalists, a member of the city council of Rotterdam, a professional photographer and a retired lawyer. The Dutch participants joined the flotilla to bring humanitarian aid ànd to break the illegal Israeli siege on Gaza. From their current location in Corfu (Greece) the participants of the flotilla have communicated that they want to bring hope for the people in Gaza and that there has to come an end to injustice and collective punishment by Israel. The mini flotilla in the canals in Utrecht was received with much positive response from the audience. There were many thumbs up and supportive words. One of the organizers of the mini flotilla said: "The Dutch government is very pro Israel but the Dutch people are very critical towards the injustice that is being done to the Palestinian people. Israel has to end the occupation and the illegal blocakde of the Gazastrip. We want to be on the right side of history and we cannot allow our government to be on the wrong side any longer." |
Uitzicht op de Middellandse Zee en wat is het enorm bijzonder om zoveel verschillende wereldburgers met hetzelfde doel te mogen ontmoeten. Deze week zijn we druk bezig om alle opvarende van de boten training te geven in geweldloosheid, juridische aspecten en boot veiligheid. Tijdens deze tweedaagse training wordt er ook veel aandacht besteed aan teambuilding. Amerikanen, Canadezen, Fransen, Italianen, Belgen, Spanjaarden en nog zoveel meer nationaliteiten. Overal zie je mensen met 'Open Gaza' T-shirts en kleurige vlaggen met Shalom / Salaam erop. De aankondiging van Israel dat het toestemming geeft bouwmaterialen voor 1200 huizen en 18 scholen in Gaza door te laten is de jongste prestatie van de Freedom Flotilla die volgende week gaat varen.
In de weken naar aanloop van het vertrek van de Flotilla heeft Israel een aantal stappen genomen om de problemen in de publieke opinie aan te pakken die zijn gerezen naar aanleiding van het initiatief Freedom Flotilla 2 – Stay Human. Deze organisatie zegt echter dat deze stappen op zijn hoogst van symbolische betekenis zijn, dat ze nauwelijks voldoen aan de verplichtingen die Israel onder Internationaal Recht heeft, dat ze onvoldoende tegemoet komen aan de behoeften van de Palestijnen in Gaza en dat ze in de kern bedoeld zijn om de bezetting en het controlesysteem dat Israel uitoefent over Palestijnse levens te handhaven. Israel’s announcement of authorization for construction materials for 1,200 homes and 18 schools in Gaza is the latest achievement by the Freedom Flotilla, scheduled to sail next week.
In the weeks leading up to the flotilla, Israel has taken a number of steps to try to address the concerns raised in the public eye by the Freedom Flotilla 2 – Stay Human initiative. However organizers say that these steps are symbolic at best, fall far short of Israel’s obligations under international law, are insufficient to meet the needs of Palestinians in Gaza, and are fundamentally designed to maintain the occupation and system of control that Israel exerts over Palestinian lives. Prominenten steunen hulpvloot naar Gaza
Cabaretier Najib Amhali, priester Antoine Bodar en de voormalige ministers Laurens Jan Brinkhorst en Jan Pronk bevinden zich onder de Nederlandse prominenten die Freedom Flotilla 2, de hulpvloot naar Gaza, steunen. De lijst bevat namen van bekende Nederlandse politici, kunstenaars, journalisten en wetenschappers. De Nederlanders zijn in gezelschap van onder andere de Amerikaanse schijfster Alice Walker, voormalig Unesco-directeur Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Guatamalese Nobelprijswinnares Rigoberta Menchu en de Amerikaanse wetenschapper en filosoof Noam Chomsky.
Freedom Flotilla 2 vertrekt in het weekend van 25 juni 2011 naar de door Israël vrijwel hermetisch afgesloten Gazastrook. Een Nederlandse-Italiaanse boot vaart mee in het konvooi van 12 schepen. Lees verder

Why would young people from a place like Gaza participate in UK Formula student when there are so many urgent needs to address in the besieged poverty struck Gaza Strip? Sahar Mousa explains: "We need to tell everybody that we are a part of this world and we deserve our place in it.”

The Rafah border between Egypt and the Gaza strip will be opened in the next couple of days. People of the Gaza strip will be able to leave Gaza and enjoy the freedom of movement. Or will they..? Not quite. Filmmaker Mohammad Rujailah comments. Soon, I’ll be able to cross the borders of my country, but I want the right to move INSIDE my country. We should not be that excited about going OUT, when we are prevented from going IN.
When Egyptians said that they are opening THEIR borders we were happy, we deserve it, thank you Egypt so much for that, we know that Egypt is an independent country, they can do what they want! But they shushed Israel and ask them not to interfere. Why? This is an internal Egyptian decision that Israel has no say in. One year ago today, six ships carrying nearly 700 human rights defenders, met at sea to commence the last leg of our voyage to Gaza to break Israel’s brutal stranglehold on 1.5 million Palestinians. A few hours later the Israeli military launched a full-scale assault on our civilian convoy, killing nine of our colleagues and injuring over 50 others. De gewone burger - iemand zoals u en ik - in de Gazastrook leeft al vier jaar onder het juk van een illegale blokkade die de Israëlische overheid handhaaft over het gebied. Deze blokkade zorgt er voor dat Gaza een openluchtgevangenis is geworden, waarin 1,6 miljoen mensen collectief gestraft worden. De Freedom Flotilla brengt met haar tocht naar de Gazastrook niet alleen hulpgoederen, maar ook hoop en steun; een teken dat mensen die in vrijheid leven, aan de andere kant van de wereld, de mensen in de Gazastrook niet vergeten zijn. Daarom nemen wij op onze boot niet alleen rolstoelen, brillen, verbandmateriaal en schoolspullen mee, maar ook brieven, kaarten en (kinder)tekeningen waarmee u een persoonlijke boodschap kunt overbrengen aan mensen die deze support het erg hard nodig hebben.
